Dr. Gumersindo B. Garcia, Sr. was a famous Filipino doctor and surgeon known for his deep
kindness and honesty. For him, medicine was not just a job. It was a sacred calling to help people
with humility and love. He wanted to make healthcare better for everyone. He believed that all
patients, whether rich or poor, deserved excellent care and respect.
One of his greatest acts of service happened after World War II. The Mary Johnston Hospital
(MJH) in Tondo, Manila, was destroyed during the war. Dr. Garcia became the hospital director
and took on the huge task of rebuilding it.
Under his leadership, the hospital opened its doors again. It became a safe place and a lifeline for
poor and vulnerable families in Manila. Because of his hard work, the hospital named the
Gumersindo Garcia Hall in his honor.
Dr. Garcia was a true servant leader who always put others first. He taught young doctors and
nurses to treat patients with both high skill and a gentle heart.
Though he passed away in 1964, his life and ministry still inspire healthcare workers today to
serve their communities with love and excellence.
